MDO Plywood, sometimes called “MDO” for short, is a kind of exterior plywood with one or two side(s) coated with thermosetting resin-impregnated fiber overlay .

About MDO

MDO means Medium Density Overlay, which is thermosetting resin-impregnated fiber paper .  MDO contains thermosetting resin. After bonded on plywood substrate, Medium Density Overlay become rigid and resist moisture, water, abrasion and chemical corrosion.

MDO Plywood  VS  Commercial Plywood

MDO plywood has inherited all advantages of commercial plywood: high strength-to-weight ratio, large dimension, stability . However, MDO surfaces give MDO plywood good advantages over commercial plywood: paintable, more durable, more smooth surfaces, excellent performances in resistance to water/moisture, weather, wear and chemical corrosion .

MDO Plywood Production

MDO plywood is a form of overlaid plywood. The substrate of MDO plywood is the same to the core of exterior plywood . The core veneers are rotary-cut veneers peeled from round logs. The adhesive for the core is water resistant phenol-formaldehyde glue.

The surface of substrate for MDO plywood need special cares. The surface of substrate for MDO should not have open defects. All small defects (like knots, splits) on the surfaces of substrates should be carefully treated (usually with putty). Then the substrate should be sanded very well . That's why MDO plywood is more smooth .

The final stage of production is coating the weather-resistant resin overlay onto the substrates by heat and pressure.
